    Little known about the now celebrated 1912 Bread and Roses strike is that prominent Progressive-era reformers condemned the strikers as “uncivil” and “violent.” An examination of Bread and Roses’ controversies reveals how a ruling class enlists middle-class sentiments to oppose social-justice arguments and defend a civil order—not for the good of democracy but against it. The strikers’ inspiring actions to push against civil boundaries and create democratic space can challenge today’s teachers of public writing to question the construction of civility as an a contextual virtue and consider the class-struggle uses of unruly rhetoric for our new Gilded Age

    The orbit of the Cepheid AW Per

    An orbit for the classical Cepheid AW Per was derived. Phase residuals from the light curve are consistent with the light-time effect from the orbit. The companion was studied using IUE spectra. The flux distribution from 1300 to 1700 A is unusual, probably an extreme PbSi star, comparable to a B7V or B8V star. The flux of the composite spectrum from 1200 A through V is well matched by F7Ib and B8V standard stars with Delta M(sub upsilon) = 3(m) multiplied by 1. The mass function from the orbit indicates that the mass of the Cepheid must be greater that 4.7 solar mass if it is the more massive component. A B7V to B8V companion is compatible with the 1 sigma lower limit (3.5 solar mass) from the mass function. This implies that the Cepheid has the same mass, but the large magnitude difference rules this out. It is likely that the companion is itself a binary

    Patients\u27 perceptions of stressors in the intensive care unit : a meta-analysis

    This study reveals what intensive care unit (ICU) patients from different countries consider most stressful about the ICU experience. A review of 16 independent studies on patients’ perceptions of ICU stressors yielded 10 data sets from seven countries that met criteria for inclusion in a meta-analysis. Stressors were categorized according to three types – bodily, psychological, and physical environmental – and were selected for comparison based on their frequent appearance among the top 20 stressors in each study selected. Findings showed considerable agreement between studies. Being in pain, Having tubes in the nose and mouth, and Being thirsty were found to be the top ICU stressors of the top 25 identified. Bodily stressors had the highest combined mean value, but mean differences were determined not to be statistically significant. Given the diversity of studies sampled, these findings indicate that certain aspects of the ICU may be universally stressful to patients

    Innovative Framework for Academic and Public Health Departments\u27 Partnership on Preparing Future Practitioners- Preliminary Data

    This article presents a model to respond to current public health challenges and transform knowledge into preventive strategies. It also presents an innovative way for academic institutes and public health departments to focus on public health workforce development. Academic institutes partnership with public health departments have started fostering service-learning opportunities to engage students in public health with an emphasis on the specific public health outcomes. However, the benefit of service–learning projects on the health departments and the populations served is largely unknown. Recently, these service-learning opportunities are becoming less sustainable due to the inability of preceptors to provide the necessary support for students during the internship project. This article presents an innovative framework developed for sustainable academic health department partnership and describes the rationale for the collaboration. The evaluation of the framework suggested positive outcomes for students, the academic institution, the health department, and the communities. This framework can serve as a guide for academic institutions and public health departments whose goal is to address the current public heath challenges via using service-learning method and develop strong public health workforce

    Adapting a Curriculum Unit to Facilitate Interaction Between Technology, Mathematics and Science in the Elementary Classroom: Identifying Relevant Criteria

    Calls for the integration of subjects continue to emanate from a wide range of professional bodies, including governments and subject associations. Yet as some authors suggest, blurring the boundaries between subjects may be one of the most daunting tasks educators face. The authors have recently begun a research study that will investigate the extent to which (a) relevant mathematics and science can be made explicit in a technology curriculum unit, (b) pupils utilise this mathematics and science learning, and (c) pupils' ability to design is enhanced by making the mathematics and science explicit and useful. This paper reports the results of Phase 1 of the study: an examination of research literature in order to identify criteria to inform the re-writing of an existing technology curriculum (to be used as a research instrument) that previously did not make explicit embedded mathematics and science concepts. Our reading of the literature has identified two essential criteria that must be met during the re-writing: (a) protecting the integrity of the subjects and (b) identifying the nature and purpose of the intended learning
